Two New Lorries and Two New Trailers Join the West Buckland Haulage Fleet
Investment in the right kit is what keeps a heavy haulage operation moving forward, and we've just made a significant addition at West Buckland Haulage with two new lorries and two new bespoke trailers entering service. Both trailers have been specified with European work firmly in mind, giving us greater reach, greater flexibility, and the ability to take on jobs that wouldn't be possible with standard equipment.
Built for the Job, Not Off the Shelf
There's a clear difference between buying trailers off the production line and commissioning equipment built for the specific work you do. The new additions to our fleet fall squarely into the second category. Both trailers have been designed and built to handle the kind of heavy plant and machinery movement we do day in, day out, with particular attention paid to the demands of European haulage.
For anyone running large plant across multiple countries, the right trailer is the difference between a job being viable or not. Permit restrictions, height limits, weight allowances and route planning all hinge on the specification of the kit you turn up with. Get it right and the job runs smoothly. Get it wrong and you're rerouting, reloading, or turning the work down entirely.
The Bespoke 2-Axle Lightweight Trailer
The first of the two new trailers is a bespoke 2-axle unit, built lightweight by design. The reason is straightforward. When you're operating across Europe with heavy plant and machinery on the back, every kilogram of trailer weight is a kilogram of payload you can't carry. By specifying a lightweight build without compromising structural integrity, we've opened up additional capacity for the kind of large machinery our customers need moved.
It's a trailer built specifically for cross-border work. The lighter chassis means we can carry more useful weight within European axle and gross weight limits, making it ideal for the larger plant items that other operators struggle to handle within permit constraints. For UK plant hire companies, construction firms and machinery dealers exporting or relocating equipment into Europe, it's a serious advantage.
The Bespoke 4-Axle Trailer With Lowering Wells
The second trailer is where the engineering really comes into its own. This is a bespoke 4-axle unit fitted with specially designed wells, sometimes called troughs, that can be lowered to accept the wheelbase of the machinery being transported. The wheels slot directly into the wells, dropping the overall height of the load on the trailer significantly.
The numbers speak for themselves. The difference from the bottom of the well to the top is 400mm, with the wells ranging from 500mm at their lowest point to 900mm at the top. That 400mm drop is enormous when you're dealing with European route planning. Height restrictions on continental motorways, tunnels and bridges often dictate what can and can't be transported under a given permit, and shaving 400mm off the overall load height can mean the difference between a job being permitted and being refused.
For customers moving tall machinery into or out of Europe, this trailer opens up routes and possibilities that simply weren't on the table before. Articulated dump trucks, large excavators, and other tall plant items can now be moved with significantly more flexibility on permit applications and routing.
What This Means for Customers
These two new trailers, paired with two new tractor units, give us additional capacity and additional capability across the heavy haulage side of the business. We can take on more work, handle larger loads, and offer routing options that weren't previously available, particularly for European movements.
For customers, that translates into real practical benefits. Plant hire companies sending machines abroad can move larger or taller items without compromise. Construction firms with European contracts have a UK-based heavy haulage partner who understands the technical demands of continental work. Machinery dealers and manufacturers can plan cross-border deliveries with confidence that the kit is going to arrive without permit complications.
Investing in the Operation
Bringing two new lorries and two new bespoke trailers into the fleet at the same time is a substantial investment, and it reflects where we see West Buckland Haulage going. The demand for high-capability heavy haulage, particularly into and out of Europe, continues to grow. Standard trailers can handle standard work, but the customers we're working with increasingly need the kind of bespoke solutions these new trailers deliver.
It also reflects our approach to fleet management generally. We don't run kit until it falls apart. We invest in equipment that's properly specified for the job, maintained to a high standard, and replaced when the operational case is right. That gives our drivers the tools to do the job properly and gives customers the confidence that their loads are being handled by a fleet that's fit for purpose.
